Subject: Anabolic Steroids and Cartrophen Posted by LizMo on September 19, 2008 at 06:31:56: Hello There, Another old dog question! Boris, as you know, is getting more distinguished every day and I am wondering what else I can do to make him as mobile as possible, especially for when he gets even more distinguished. From the previous kind posts on this board, from my own research etc, I think I am doing most of what I can do (dietary supplements and Metacam - a NSAID). There are two other possibilities I want to research and I would like to see whether people had experience with either of these approaches. The first is Cartrophen injections (usually a course of once per week for a month). My only experience with this form of treatment is that my vet recommended a course of them for my labrador. Unfortunately she died before she finished the course so I don't know if they were effective or not (she was ill anyway - she had metastatic insulinoma and it was only months later that I realised that Cartrophen is actually contraindicated for some forms of cancer - but that is another story). The other is anabolic steroids. An older vet friend of mine says that, in his days of small animal practice, he had very good results with these but I can't find much about them at all - maybe he is outdated? I only have experience with corticosteroids (Prednisolone - which was fabulous at controlling my lab's glucose levels but she suffered the Cushings type side effects, poor lamb, and I don't think the risk/benefit is worth it this time). Thanks,
