At 8 perhaps it's not just arthritis? Have you considered glucosamine/chondroitin for joint strenghthening (for the long haul, which could be 6+ years!) ... baby aspirin is an inexpensive option, but it was Rimadyl that really made Reba's mobility improve. However, some folks don't like Rimadyl because of the risk of side effects (though Reba was on it for years and never had any trouble). Near the end Deramaxx was very effective, and may be better than Rimadyl, but they both certainly cost more than I wish! Does she lay on soft surfaces? Sometimes even if they like the hard floor, it's better if they don't lay on it. Is she carrying a few extra lbs (like I am)? That can put stress on her joints, as well. Anyway, all things your vet probably already mentioned!
