Subject: adopted dog - when did you know

This popped into my head this morning, and I was wondering... for those of you who have adopted chessies, when did you know they were your dog? Or perhaps a better way to phrase it, is when did the dog decide you were his family? And how did you know that?
With our latest adopted dog, I think it was the first time he rested his head in my lap and let me pat him without him peeing or grumbling/growling.
