We went to New York Chesapeake Bay Retriever Rescue in August of 2005 (a 6-hour drive each way) to adopt "Drake," a handsome Chessie in rescue. My daughter Stephanie had fallen in love with his photo, and he appeared to be a lovely dog.

When we got there, we were advised to interact with at least 2-3 dogs. Stephanie (age 14 at the time) chose Ruffie as her first "interaction." I have never seen a dog so taken with anyone, ever. He gazed at her like she was Christmas and Fourth of July all at once. While she interacted with Drake also, it was Ruffie that truly chose her. She was a bit torn, but decided that since Ruff was so taken with her, she would choose Ruffie.

At that moment, she had been holding Ruffie on a lead at her side. He turned to her and jumped on her, knocking her down, and held her down and licked her face, big tail going and going.

While we've had our number of rocky spots, he was the right choice, and he's been a wonderful addition to our family.

It does take a while to settle in, and there are rough spots even after the settling in has happened. But when it's the right pairing, you power through and make it work.
