I've never seen a purebred Chesapeake have hackles that stand up when it's on alert or alarmed like some other breeds. In fact when helping novices with aggression issues I always point out that the Chesapeake does not have this obvious sign unlike other dogs who have a noticeable ridge of hair standing upright as a warning; you have to learn to read other signs such as posture, staring, stiff legged gait, etc.

I'm guessing what you have is not a Chesapeake based on the photos you've posted and your description of its bristling hackles.

I have seen CBRs with the 'mohawk' ridge of hair down the back Donna describes but this is not a reaction to surroundings, it's simply a phase of hair loss.
