My dog Shadow is purebred (she's adopted, but I know her background) and when she's really upset she has hackles - the hair between her shoulder blades definitely stands up. But Shadow is a smoother coat chessie and is often confused with a chocolate lab. Our other chessie, with a much curlier coat - doesn't show hackles (or at least I haven't seen it), and he's never confused with being a chocolate lab.
But I do have to look for other signs first, because by the time her hackles have raised, she's in a zone that's hard to get her out of. Her ears are my best tell-tale sign - and visible from all angles.
cheers,
veeann
